Proposal: An Ephemera API for iOS
I just broke & repurchased my iPhone.  I wasn’t on Wifi when I set up the new one, so I decided to bypass the restore from iCloud procedure vs. wait 3 hours to redownload all of my apps.  I love this kind of clean slate in general, but this time something clicked for me about why I was enjoying it so much: none of my existing apps were there, so I didn’t have any of the baggage....

My Prayer for Movember
Stop it.  Stop pretending you are doing anything by growing a mustache in November, in some kind of weird Man Solidarity for prostate cancer awareness.  Are you a baseball or hockey player and you are in the playoffs?  Then fine, grow it out.  Show your team spirit.  Note also that you are growing a full beard in this case.  Not a mustache, because you aren’t an idiot.  And this is why....

QR Codes: The Utility Problem
I read 2 QR code articles today.  This one is probably the most entertaining.  It essentially argues that nobody knows what QR codes are (still), and that even when they do, they are too obnoxious to use to make them useful. As a one time QR proponent (larger for my own non marketing related ideas), My feeling is not that QR Codes are fundamentally flawed, but that they have been taken over by...

killscreendaily: File this one under “British People!” Anyways, the makers of a recent documentary on the Northern Ireland conflict confused videogame footage for actual war footage, and slipped it into an ITV (the British TV channel that isn’t the BBC) documentary. The game comes from Arma 2, an…

Small Struggles, Small Victories.
This week I flipped the rear wheel of my bike over to the fixed hub.  I’m now officially riding “fixie” for the first time.  To many of you, this may seem like a pretty minor event, as I’m wickedly behind the curve on this trend.  But whatever.  For me, it was a “why not” kind of decision - I’m not overly concerned with the style aspects of it, it was just...

Good points, bad points
A few months ago I went to an amazing pinball machine shop in the sleepy little town of Lyons, Colorado.  After exchanging a Lincoln for a fistful of quarters, I proceeded to some of the more modern machines, tempted by bright lights and guns n’ roses.  After a couple of pretty pathetic games, I decided to check out one of the more vintage cabinets (that this place specialized in). What...

Regarding #newtwitterguidelines
A few days ago, a minor shitstorm erupted when twitter more or less announced that they didn’t want people using their API to build apps that competed with their own clients.  This is a reasonable direction for a company that’s become more consumer-focused than it was when the API was first released and they didn’t have any native clients of their own (save the website).  I would...

Having a number of years experience in the mobile development space, pre-iOS even, the one thing that I find magical and delightful about iOS is how easily being a developer is.  I don’t mean that iOS has the best garbage collection, or that the Ad Hoc build process or store approval process is not at times hellish.  But with android looking more and more like J2ME, iOS is powerful in the...

Instagram = Multiplayer Lomography
It’s been fun the past few months playing with Instagram.  I only have a few friends on there, but nonetheless it’s carved out a nice little niche in my oversharing life that something like hipstamatic never did.   2 Things though: 1) I’m using it less.  2) Pretty sure my friends are also using it less.  I might just be that it’s settling into a groove of people posting...

Paths & Platforms
brycedotvc: A little start-up kicked up a big storm when they launched late Sunday night. The company is Path and they’ve built a really beautiful iPhone application for sharing experiences with a close network of friends. They’ve decided to go against the tide of most large social services by limiting the number of people you can share with to a mere 50. I’ve read a few of the articles and...

Reward Moments
Throughout the process of developing a new activity/fitness game, I’ve been thinking a lot about rewards mechanics and specifically those related to game systems of any variety.  Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the way that most badging / achievement systems are designed, but when done right it can be a very powerful motivator.   XBox Live more or less invented the platform for...
